Who would have thought that you could take a 3-day-weekend-long diving vacation to Florida? A 612-mile, 11-hour (one-way) drive didn't stop 13 lucky Mountain Divers from enjoying
some spectacular diving in the crystal-clear spring water of Williston, which is close to Gainesville.
The Devil's Den is a pre-historic, underground spring with a hole in the ground above it that casts sunlight in to the rocky cavern. Approximately 50 feet in diameter at the water's surface, the rocky walls mushroom outward as you descend, providing numerous swim-throughs in rock formations. The Den is accessed through a rock staircase that is carved through the ancient Earth and descends to the upper level of the cavern where the diver walks down a wooden staircase to a dock floating in the center of the den.
After diving, everybody enjoyed a big, group dinner at the fabulous "Hilltop Restaurant." (Some Mountain Divers were a little perplexed by a Floridian's definition of a "hill") The "Hilltop" boasts some of the best service, fried seafood and milkshakes around. Later that evening a few brave Mountain Divers explored an "Above-ground cavern" and discovered a few rare breeds of wildlife to the tunes of "Bye, Bye Miss American Pie" and "Play That Funky Music Whiteboy."
The Blue Grotto is an underground cave that reaches a maximum depth of 100 feet. Divers enter the Grotto from above ground on a floating dock. Once inside the overhead
environment, there is a cable system to guide you on a tour of the under-ground/under-water microcosm. A light is needed to enjoy the scenic beauty of this majestic cave.
After divers finish the guided loop to the bottom of the cave there is a large "ballroom" that is approximately 50 feet deep where you can vent any excess nitrogen and practice attaining neutral boyancy as you watch other divers begin and complete their under water tour of the cave.
One really unique feature in the Blue Grotto is a "Dive Bell" which is a plexiglass dome that has fresh oxygen pumped to it from the surface. There divers can remove their regulators and conversate about how much fun they are having. There are also plenty of rocks to gaze upon at that level. One of them has a peace symbol carved in to it.
